Looking for things to do in Northwest Indiana this fall? You’re in the right place. For a few short weeks, the trees turn gold, the coffee menus go seasonal, and nearly every farm has a corn maze. But fall moves fast here. So I rounded up my favorite spots across Porter County and beyond. Whether you’ve lived here forever or just moved over from Illinois, this list is for you.
Pumpkin Patches and Farms
If you only visit one, make it Harvest Tyme Family Farm in Lowell. It has hayrides, a corn maze, and the nighttime Pumpkin Glow Trail. That makes it an easy afternoon that turns into an evening.
Next, head to County Line Orchard in Hobart for apples and their famous apple-cinnamon donuts. Johnson’s Farm Produce, also in Hobart, offers U-pick pumpkins, tram rides, and more than 40 activities. It’s a great pick if you have kids to tire out.
For a bigger day trip, try Fair Oaks Farms. You can pick apples and pumpkins, ride a wagon, and try cider donuts and apple cannons.
Coffee and Cozy Drink Stops
Fall here runs on seasonal lattes. Smalltown Coffee Company in Crown Point makes a Honey Cream Cap that’s worth the drive. Grindhouse Cafe in Griffith has the Pumpkin King, a spiced pumpkin and caramel latte.
Closer to home, FLUID Coffee Roasters in Valpo makes a scratch-made Masala Chai Latte. It’s warm and spiced, so you don’t need pumpkin spice at all. Meanwhile, Blackbird Cafe downtown serves an Apple Pie Chai that tastes just like it sounds.
Food Worth Leaving the House For
Start in Chesterton at Octave Grill. The Figgy Piggy has grass-fed beef, fig jam, goat cheese, and bacon. That alone is reason enough to go.
In Crown Point, Provecho Latin Provisions is one of the coziest spots off the square. Try the empanadas and the wood-fired dishes.
In Valparaiso, Albano’s Pasta Shop is perfect for handmade pasta and a glass of wine on a chilly night. Also downtown, Meditrina Market Cafe serves paprika chicken stewed with warm spices in a creamy tomato sauce. Honestly, it’s fall in a bowl.
Best Places for Fall Color
You don’t have to leave NWI to see great foliage. Coffee Creek Preserve in Chesterton has more than five miles of trails and boardwalks. They wind through woods and wetlands and along the creek.
Deep River County Park in Hobart adds river views, a historic grist mill, and fall hayrides. Indiana Dunes National Park offers Lake Michigan views along with miles of color from the dunes and wooded trails.
Finally, Gabis Arboretum at Purdue Northwest in Valparaiso is an easy golden-hour walk. Expect wooded trails, changing leaves, and prairie views.
Fall Events to Add to Your Calendar
- Crown Point Oktoberfest (October 3, 2026): Bulldog Park turns into a fall festival. Expect German-inspired food, live music, a beer garden, and hayrides.
- Pumpkinfest at Fair Oaks Farms (October 10–11, 2026): There are giant pumpkins, pumpkin-themed games, and pumpkin painting. You can also watch Indiana’s official pumpkin weigh-off.
- Fall Harvest Festival in Downtown Valpo (October 10, 2026): Enjoy pumpkin painting, cider, and caramel apples. It’s also the final Valparaiso Market of the season.
- Autumn Promenade in Downtown Valpo (October 17, 2026): Stroll downtown and collect fall treats. Flavors include caramel apple, cinnamon, maple, and pumpkin spice.
Things to Do in Northwest Indiana This Fall: A Sample Saturday
Not sure where to start? Here’s one way to spend a fall day. Grab a Masala Chai Latte at FLUID in Valpo first. Then drive to Harvest Tyme in Lowell for pumpkin picking. Later, take a golden-hour walk at Gabis Arboretum. Finish with handmade pasta at Albano’s.
Of course, you can mix and match. Just check each spot’s hours before you go, because fall schedules can change.
